What Will I Learn in an Online Nursing Refresher Course?
A typical nursing refresher course is designed for RNs who wish to return to nursing after being absent from the field for a year or more. Licensed RNs who need to renew their licenses may also complete these professional development programs. The curriculum includes coursework and clinical contact hours required for re-licensure by most state boards of nursing.
When you successfully complete the course you will be able to understand how current health care trends, such as changes in technology or the rising cost of health care, effect current nursing practices. The course will teach you effective communication skills and how to identify legal issues that pertain to the profession. You will also be able to assess patient health by taking vital signs or reviewing patient history. Some programs include specialized coursework for treating diabetic, geriatric or surgical patients. Special topics in obstetrical or pediatric nursing may also be included.
The clinical experience consists of about 100 hours of hands-on patient care in a hospital or long-term care facility. RNs with a current license may have to complete additional contact hours. A nurse preceptor will supervise you as you perform lab tests or administer medication.
What Award Levels Are Given?
Award levels vary from school to school. Some courses are non-credit refresher courses. Others programs may grant an unlicensed RN a certificate of completion. Some schools require you to complete the coursework in a specified time frame to receive an award.
What Technology Will I Need?
You should have a computer with Internet access and adequate hard drive space. You will also need an email address that you check regularly. Most schools require you to have an office suite, such as Microsoft Office or OpenOffice, that includes word processing and PowerPoint software. Your computer will also need an audio card, speaker system, DVD player and Flash plugin to download digital audio and video files. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files.
